The Spare Cat Rescue T-shirt – Then and Now

Standard

A couple of years ago, I decided that I wanted a Spare Cat Rescue T-shirt.  No such thing existed at the time.  So I went to the store and bought a t-shirt and made some stencils and got my paint out and made myself a Spare Cat Rescue T-shirt.  It was an original and one of a kind – no other Spare Cat Rescue t-shirt existed.  Until a few weeks ago!

We have been soooo excited awaiting our new t-shirts.  Ashley used her talents to draw up some ideas for us and we selected a design and off to the t-shirt printing place we went.  A couple of weeks ago, our new shirts were ready!  These shirts were paid for by us with our own money – NOT SCR money – all of your donations are spent on the animals.  They are REALLY slick!

So it was sad to “retire” the first Spare Cat Rescue T-shirt, but even more exciting for us to get our new ones!

Come by the Joplin PetSmart this weekend September 12th and 13th for the National Adoption Event – we will be there for sure on Saturday with a good selection of dogs and cats in need of forever homes.  As a bonus, you will get to witness history in the making – us wearing our new t-shirts!!!  See our Facebook page for more pictures of the new shirts.

We are having another raffle this fall – be on the look out for more info on the raffle – this is pretty exciting stuff!

We hope to see you this weekend at PetSmart in Joplin and we hope to send you home with a new forever friend!

A Moon Light River Rescue Attempt & 1 Happy Kitten & 1 Happy Young Man, too!

Standard

Kleenex alert.

Today was a huge day.  It was my 1st full 10 hour day back to work after my first chemo cocktail.  Then, immediately after that, it was off to the Spare Cat Rescue Board meeting which lasted almost 2 hours!  A day like that obviously calls for ice cream.  So off to Braum’s we went.  I got a hot fudge sundae.  I was beat and the pillow was beckoning.  On the way home, I got a call from my husband around 8:52 – I answered, “hello”.  I should have answered, “Cat 9-1-1 – what’s your emergency?”

The neighbor said that there was a trash bag of kittens someone had thrown in the river.  Step one.  Hang up.  Step 2.  Call Kaylene, our fearless leader and President and founder of Spare Cat Rescue.  Step 3 – jump out of mom’s car before it has stopped moving.  oops.  As we approach the house, we see the neighbor and we pull up.  Kaylene has tried to contact the animal control officer and is on her way in to pick me up.  The neighbors are there holding one yellow tabby kitten – wet and wrapped in a towel.  They begin to tell us a horrific story as we all stand in the middle of the road and listen in horror.

The neighbor’s daughter and the boyfriend were at Spring River in Carthage out by Kellogg Lake when they spotted a trash bag floating in the river above the dam.  Then, they spotted a small, wet, kitten struggling to make it to the boat dock.  They could not reach the trash bag but could see that there were other kittens and some movement in the bag.  It appeared that one kitten had already expired.  The girl brought the kitten home and recounted the horrific story to her family – she was very visibly shaken up and upset.  They were not able to keep the kitten, so we took the kitten with us until we could figure out Plan B.

STOP!  Ice Cream!  There’s only 1 thing in this world that trumps ice cream – kittens in distress – I put the sundae in the freezer – hopefully, it will still be there when I get back.

Kaylene arrived and with carrier with kitten (now named “Lucky”, of course), camera and flashlight in hand, I jumped in the car and off we went with Darrell at the wheel.  From the back seat, I commented, “There’s nothing I’d rather be doing at 9:07 on a Thursday night than emergency kitten rescue.”  I’m not tired anymore.

At the next meeting, we should probably discuss acquiring a spot light and a flashing police light for Kaylene’s car for just such emergencies.

Upon arrival, it was already dark.  We had a good description of where they last saw the trash bag and began to scour the bank, calling out to baby kitties.  The water was still.  No kitties (plenty of spiders and poison ivy, though).  Along the way, we picked up some fellow cat lovers who joined in the search.  We asked some folks who were hanging out below the dam if they had seen the bag or kittens or someone with a bag.  No one saw anything.  Neither did we.  We spent almost an hour running up and down the banks in search of baby kitties – sadly, with no luck.  With a heavy heart, the search party disbanded and we packed up and headed home.

Stop crying – there’s one happy ending here.  The neighbors across the street contacted me and they said that their grandson, Cean, wanted the kitten.  They are animal lovers and just recently rescued a big white dog.  So after a sad, fruitless search, we were able to end the night by finding Lucky a new forever home!  Cean might change the kitty’s name, but he really IS Lucky!!!  We delivered Lucky to Cean’s grandparents’ house where he is staying the night.  We asked permission to share pictures with you.  More pictures will be on facebook.  By the time we left their house, the little baby kitten was already feeling loved and much better and was reaching to Cean’s face for kisses.  I think I saw him trying to play, too!  We are so happy to be able to say that Lucky has a new home.  Thanks to the “first responders” who saved the kitten and reached out for help; Henri & Anthony; Cean and Cali; Darrell and Kaylene; Mom; Mario; and the folks at the river that helped in the search.

Their vet is Doc Martin in Lamar and I will give her a call tomorrow at 8:00 sharp to tell her the good news about her new patient!  We will be getting plenty of updates from Cean and family.

As for the person that felt that just abandoning a litter of kittens on the picnic table at the river wasn’t sufficient and felt that it was necessary to be RUTHLESS and MEAN, there’s a really, really special place in hell for you and although nothing about this episode brings me peace, that one thought helps a bit.  If you or anyone you know saw ANYTHING suspicious tonight at the river, please call my cell phone at 417-388-3340 or the animal control office of the Carthage Police Department.

Sorry this is so late, but you gotta write about this kind of stuff right now.  My hot fudge sundae is a cold fudge sundae, but still good.  Now I am tired.  Now I can rest.

Good night Lucky.

ANNOUNCING DEREK JOHNSON – WINNER OF THE BUNNY RAFFLE!!!!

Standard

Ok, Ok, I must apologize in advance for my tardiness, but the truth of the matter is that if I ever did anything in a timely manner, my friends and family would declare a national emergency and be in search of me and wonder who had abducted me and replaced me with someone who doesn’t procrastinate.  So to keep peace in the nation and keep my friends and family calm, I must continue on as usual – a slacker.  The important thing is that we want to recognize our winner – no matter how late we are!  Thanks to everyone who bought tickets, sold tickets and the local merchants for their donations!  Your generosity makes us a success!!!  Here’s our press release:

Congratulations to Derek Johnson of Sarcoxie for winning Spare Cat Rescue’s Bunny Raffle in April! Derek is now the proud owner of a very large bunny yard ornament along with several other prizes, merchandise and services that were donated by local merchants. Derek’s winning ticket was drawn out of over 1,000 tickets by Dr. Tiffany Propst, Veterinarian.

Derek and his furry cat friends reside in the Sarcoxie area.

Spare Cat Rescue wishes to thank all of our supporters who bought tickets and the many local merchants who were kind enough to donate merchandise or services for the raffle. Our raffle was a success because of your support!

Adoption Update for Saturday, August 2nd, 2014 & other stuff

Standard

WOW!!!  What a week!  We have been stupid busy this week!  Before we get to the update from offsite adoptions, let’s review the last week…

One of our board members has been feeding a sweet little kitty in her neighborhood.  Recognizing that her personality is so fantastic, she decided to see about finding her a home.  She already has a full house (like the rest of us!)  But before we can find her a new home, we need to get her all vaccinated and fixed.  Unfortunately, her belly was pretty swollen so we suspected that she was already pregnant.

So away she goes to the vet – her name is Biscuit.  When she was in surgery, the doc discovered that she was NOT pregnant.  She only appeared to be pregnant because her belly was full of fluid from a nasty infection.  If we hadn’t brought her in when we did, she would probably have been dead in another day or so.  Also, her spleen showed signs of being damaged and all of her teeth were broken.  Sounds like maybe she was hit by a car at some point.  The vet also discovered some strange looking stuff that she sent off for biopsy.  Biscuit is resting right now at the vet’s office and should be able to go to her foster home this week while we wait (with crossed fingers) for the biopsy results.  She tested negative for feline leukemia.  She is such a sweet kitty that she has won all of us over and we look forward to finding her a forever home and sharing her love with others.

Also, a concerned person in Diamond called us about a neighborhood cat in need – we call him Diamond (“Mick” was his neighborhood name).  He had been feeding this nice kitty for a few months and he would wander through, stay for a couple of days and then leave.  Repeat.  However, this past week, when the caretaker saw him, he was lifeless.  He took the kitty into his garage and called us for help.  We came down to retrieve Diamond and took him to the vet.  His gums were white and he was lifeless.  The vet did an exam and it appeared that he had a blockage in his urethra and if his bladder had not ruptured yet, it would soon be exploding.  Diamond was a very well kept kitty with nice fur, neutered and not a flea to be found anywhere on him.  This was someone’s kitty, but no one knew where he belonged.  The doc performed a feline leukemia test and it immediately showed positive.  Poor Diamond was miserable and near death and suffering, so we did what we thought would be best for him.  We had him put to sleep to end his misery but the doc said that he probably would have been dead by the end of the day if we hadn’t decided to help him.  Poor little guy.  We are sad, but comfortable in our decision to help him ease in to the walkway to the Rainbow Bridge.  Maybe we will see him again someday.

Then Saturday.  We were at the Joplin PetSmart doing offsite adoptions and we were ON FIRE!!!  We found homes for 5 dogs and 3 kittens.  Also during the week, we found a home for Toni, a huge gray and white girl who was very talkative.  Toni was one of my favorite kitties and I was very, very happy that she found a home.  One of the dogs that we found a home for on Saturday has a unique story.  His name is Budda and he is a tan 7 year old male Bassett/Golden Retriever mix.  We took him to PetSmart last week, too and he was a BIG hit – very popular with everyone – he was a sweetheart!  This week, a pair of young girls saw Budda and one of them realized that it was her dog!  Apparently what had happened was the parents surrendered the dog to the shelter because he kept getting out of the yard and running away.  We suspect that since he wasn’t neutered yet, he was probably looking for love!  Now, he has been neutered and the girl adopted him from us and hopefully, he will stay home now!

Congratulations to all the pets that found homes this weekend!  Thanks to all of the volunteers, too!

Don’t forget – we are still in need of live traps, noisy washable cat toys and fabric – see facebook for more information or send us an email at spare_cat_rescue@yahoo.com.

An Update on Nelly, A Former Shelter Dog

Standard

One day a couple of months ago, my coworker said that someone had tracked me down at work to give me an update on a dog they had adopted from us at offsite adoptions at the Joplin PetSmart.  My work is not in any way associated with my rescue work, so I thought this was strange.  To my surprise, I received an email update with pictures of one of our FAVORITE shelter dogs – Nelly!  I want to share the update with all of you.  These updates really help all of us keep going and we can’t even describe how excited we get when we receive an update from pet parents.  I still have others to share with you, too.

Fran remembered where I worked because I had mentioned it during Nelly’s adoptions.  I had been working at her former property several months before and had some contact with her during that time.

“I was looking through some old records related to our house in Joplin and came across a note I had written to you regarding a PetSmart adoption where you had been volunteering several years ago.  Let me know if you have a private e-mail and I will bring you up to date on Nelly!  Thanks for all you do!  Nelly’s got quite a bit of energy and flies through the air when chasing tennis balls or frisbees!  Very loving dog!!  Nelly is the best. We are now on a farm in Lexington, KY. She has a brothers, sisters, and lots of friends! Very spoiled dog! ”

Thank you Fran for taking the time to track me down and give us this wonderful update on Nelly!  I will be posting more pictures of her on our Facebook page.

Give Nelly kisses for us!  Nelly got passed up week after week at offsite adoptions – we couldn’t understand why no one was taking her home because she was so fantastic but now we know that no one else could adopt her because she was waiting for her new family.

Spare Cat Rescue Update

Standard

I hope you aren’t planning on reading this post while you are waiting at a stoplight because it is really, really long.  Unless, of course, you are at the stoplight at Newman Rd and Rangeline.  Then, you might have time to read the whole thing. I could name a certain Airline that would allow you to catch up on reading ALL of our blog posts while you wait for their consistently delayed/cancelled flights, but I will refrain…

Well my fellow animal lovers – I must apologize – much time has passed since our last correspondence. A lot has happened between then and now. Parents have been sick and passed away. Beloved kitties have been sick and passed away. SCR rummage sale and auction came and went with HUGE success. Special foster babies found forever homes. Cancer. Surgery. Pain. Laughter with friends. Soccer games. Foster kitties that we thought were gone forever have returned. Work. Offsite adoptions. Friends have moved. Fingernails have grown. And been chewed off. Parents of pets adopted at offsite adoptions have connected with us. Insulin for my cat went up $35 since last month to a whopping $230. Gained 15 pounds but will be losing it quickly as my budget for food just got raped to pay for insulin… 🙂 and I have spent wayyyyyyy too much time at airports lately.

Life has happened. That doesn’t leave much time for blogs and facebook!

So let’s review. SCR Auction & Rummage Sale. Earlier this year, a friend and neighbor moved but couldn’t take her belongings so I suggested she donate them to SCR. Our auction was on June 1st and was a HUGE success. In fact, we nearly fainted several times. Of course, SCR folks bought a fair amount of the stuff, too! With those donations, we will be able to spay and neuter SEVERAL kitties! On June 14th, we had the SCR rummage sale. Many of our friends and family, upon hearing of our sale, donated items to the sale, too. Thanks to everyone who donated items and to everyone for coming out to support us. We saw many friends at the sale! Though dead tired and operating on very little sleep due to travel misfortunes (refer to top “wayyyyyyy too much time at airports”), the success of the sale kept me pumped! It was an INCREDIBLE success! With all of the donations from our supporters, we pulled in just over $2,000!!!! Every penny of that money will go to help cats and dogs in our area. It was a lot of work and a special thanks to my mom who spent countless hours cleaning stuff and preparing for the sale. Thanks also to some of our local radio stations for plugging the sale for us! We would love to have another sale, but our main problem is that we do not have anywhere to store the donations. If anyone has a shed or garage that they aren’t using – we could use the space to store items for future sales!

Sadly, our small group and many other friends mourn the loss of one of our biggest fans, Margaret. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and we will miss her cute kitty cartoons that she used to send to us.

One of our very own volunteers mourns the loss of one of his own kitties this week, Danny. Danny was a handsome Siamese kitty who was almost 17 years old! Ed & Betty got Danny when he was just a teeny little kitten. He had a very good life and was incredibly spoiled – as it should be! We will see Danny again – when we get to heaven…

We also tried to save a black and white kitten, but unfortunately, we were not successful this time. It was one of a litter that was in need of help. This particular kitten was taken in by one of our volunteers because it was looking especially puny when she went to feed the kitties one night. She took him home and he was covered in big, huge “Montana size” fleas. She gave him a bath, which killed many of the fleas, but several still remained. Another effort was made to comb some of the fleas off. The kitten was given some wet food and tons of kisses before he was tucked in on his big fluffy pillow for the night. By the next morning, however, the little kitten seemed to have worsened and was taken for vet care. Sadly, the little kitten had already lost too much blood from the flea infestation and did not survive. As sad as it is, one has to consider that the kitten, in that last day of its life – was probably happier and felt more love and was warm and had a full tummy – more than it had in its whole life. He died happy and loved. Sometimes when our volunteers try to save a pet, we are met with this ending. It makes it very difficult to try again, but we have to keep trying to save the furry babies. When we succeed, there’s no other feeling more ecstatic!

I am excited to say that I was recently tracked down by a family who adopted one of our favorite foster dogs, Nelly. She contacted my employer and she remembered which department I worked in and the email trickled down to me. Once I made contact with her, she sent her story and lots of AWESOME pictures of Nelly. I will be sharing her story and photos with you in a separate blog post. Stories from pet parents keep us going!

Our foster kitty, Fiona, who had been gone for 6 weeks or so and had been presumed to have moved in with someone else – finally returned! We are so happy to see her! She has been staying inside these past few weeks. Another foster cat that had gone AWOL also was found and returned to her appropriate spot!

Cancer. Surgery & Pain. We’ll just skip that part…

Insulin – here’s a sad story – no, not the fact that the insulin was $125 when I first started buying it and now it’s over $230. Yes, that’s sad, too.( First of all, let’s just put this out there – my cat is “special” and doesn’t use the regular insulin… she has to use “the good stuff”. The Cadillac of Insulin. And you thought gas prices were high!) Last year, a friend of my husband came to visit for a week. The friend’s family lives in Mexico. One night while I was giving my cat her evening insulin shot, he said, “Que estas haciendo?” which means, “what are you doing?” So I explained to him that my cat has diabetes which is controlled by insulin shots twice a day. He then told us that his dad in Mexico has diabetes, too. I said, “Oh – so your dad does shots too?” (foot in mouth…foot in mouth…) He said, “No. He can’t afford insulin.”                                   (that big space there represents the huge awkward silent pause that followed that comment). How sad. And how horrible I felt. Just like I feel horrible complaining about Tati’s insulin going up again when there are HUMANS who use that insulin and they probably can’t afford it anymore. People who are on this particular insulin are on it probably because they didn’t respond to regular insulin. Imagine living on a fixed income and buying insulin for $125/month and then having to pay $230/month for the insulin. Where are you going to get that extra $105? Very upsetting.

Thanks to all of my friends and family for the recent support they provided. They just proved that they are better friends than I am and they give me something to strive for. And proved to my husband that they can cook better than me! (darnit!)

I’m sure I have left out some important things but this is just the short version (YEAH RIGHT!)

Just a reminder as I listen to fireworks exploding outside while I write this. This is a good time of year to keep your pets inside. I will not discuss the heinous acts that have been committed against pets during this time of year. Also remember that the fireworks might frighten your pets and they may escape and run for miles – possibly getting hit by a car or meeting with other bad luck. My dog is deathly afraid of fireworks and refuses to go outside to use the bathroom during this time of year. I have found that it is helpful if I put him on a leash and go out with him. We try to coordinate this bathroom break activity with times of the day when it isn’t so active outside. And GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Viva Mexico!!! Don’t forget to watch the soccer game tomorrow at 11 CST – The Netherlands and Mexico. You are probably sitting there thinking, “Hmmm. I thought this was an animal rescue blog. What does soccer have to do with cats and dogs?” Well, I can safely say that you could give me ANY subject – ANYTHING – and I will somehow find a way to relate it to cats. (

Nelly - from 2011 - an awesome dog who found a good home. Turns out she lived next door to my former boss!

Nelly – from 2011 – an awesome dog who found a good home. Turns out she lived next door to my former boss!

Just ask my co-workers – they try to stump me all of the time – and fail.)  As for soccer, my cat, Bonnie, loves to watch TV and soccer is one of her favorites!

Hey everyone.  If you are not already following us on facebook, please do so.  You will be more “in the loop” with what is going on with Spare Cat Rescue if you are following us on facebook.  We do live facebook posts from our Saturday offsite adoption events and we post lots of cute pictures – LIVE!  It is a better way to keep up with what is going on with your favorite animal rescue group!  We always link our blog posts on the Facebook page, too, so you won’t miss any of our blog stories if you are on facebook.

Don’t forget to check out the new website:

http://www.sparecatrescue.org and thanks to Braden for making that happen – it is super fine!!!!

come and join us next Saturday at the Jasper gas station right off the highway for the Maple Leaf Bike Ride (weather permitting and it better not rain because I am really excited about this).  We will be helping by passing out beverages and snacks (NOT paid for by SCR – all of our donations go to help the animals) to riders as they pass by – I think we will be there from 8 to 11 or 12 – come and hang out (but bring your own beverage – we are saving the gatorade for the bikers…).
