Some Kitties Who Are Looking for a New Forever Home…

Now available at PetSmart Adoption Center in Joplin!  Cute Kitties!  Stop by to see them!  Some have hopefully found homes by the time this blog gets posted – which would be good news.  In other words, we can’t guarantee the availability of any of these cats.  Hopefully they have all been adopted.  BUT we take over new kitties every 2 to 3 days so if you don’t see what you are looking for, keep checking back.

There are many advantages to adopting a kitty from the PetSmart Adoption Center.  All of the kitties have been Feline Leukemia tested (and are negative) and all kitties are current on vaccinations.  AND PetSmart gives the new pet parents a big coupon book with every adoption!  The coupon book includes coupons for food, litter, toys and other things a new pet owner might need for their furry new addition to their home.  And even though you might be adopting a cat, there are coupons for dog stuff, too!

Onyx – a very handsome gentleman who loves everyone.  He would be comfortable at your child’s classroom during show and tell or at a rest home visiting Grandma.

Petey – not quite 1 year old and therefore, he still has some kittenish behaviors that we love so much!

Minxy – Torti Point Siamese- Her eyes are very, very blue.  She exhibits typical Siamese behaviors.

Mobylina – One year old female tabby.  Note the halo above her head in the picture – yes, she is very sweet – as sweet as an angel!

Check Out Tillie – A Wonderful Special Needs Kitty in Need of a Loving Home

Spare Cat Rescue would like to show off one of the wonderful kitties that is waiting for a forever home.  She is being offered by the Carthage Humane Society and is currently hanging out at the Joplin PetSmart Adoption Center.  Go by and visit her!  Here’s her bio:

Tillie is a 10 year old short hair brown tabby – she is BEAUTIFUL!!!  Tillie is special because she is deaf (wellll… that’s only ONE of the things that makes her special – her purr, Elvis lip, dandy personality & good looks are special, too!).  Because of this, she will need to be an INDOOR ONLY kitty – obviously because she cannot hear cars, other animals and other threats – she will need to be inside only.  She also needs to be the only pet because she will not be able to hear other pets approaching her and this would make her very scared.  Tillie is super affectionate and purrs a lot.  They say she has a really funny meow, too.  She has a very unique Elvis smile that makes her look super cute!  (see pic below)

She will be a wonderful addition to a dedicated, loving family!  Go check her out at PetSmart and give her some loving!  Tell all of your friends about her, too!

A Senior Kitty Gets a Second Chance – Thanks to a Persistent Cat Lover!

Here’s a story for you that will make you smile!

We received a message via facebook from a fellow cat lover, Heather.  Here’s the story.

“Hi. I’m reaching out to you from Kirksville, MO. I’m looking for help finding a place to go for a senior cat whose owner was put in a nursing home several months ago. The cat, female, spayed, 15 years old, healthy, has been living at the house for those several months with someone going out to care for her 2-3 times a week. The house sold last week. Now the law office handling the owners affairs is going to have the cat euthanized this week if we (the vet clinic where she got her vet care) cannot find some place for her to go. I have been told by the local rescue and a rescue in Columbia that they will not take her because she is not adoptable by their criteria and they are not sanctuaries. Do you have any suggestions or could you possibly take her? I have 9 cats and a baby on the way and simply cannot afford to take on anymore at this time. I would if I could. I have 4 cats who are over the age of 13.“

Unfortunately, by the time I tended to the message, a week had already passed.  I asked Heather for an update and was very, very pleasantly surprised!!!

“I found her a wonderful new home! She’s slowly adjusting the other cats and to being brushed every morning…after being alone in a house by herself for nearly a year!

It took a lot of work to find her a home because of her age…but she’s in great health and was a wonderful travel companion for the hour and a half ride I had with her.  We met half way.  She is very loved.  Her new owner even made her her very own blanket in the week before she got her. I talked to her and her friend a lot over the phone and through emails and knew from those conversations that she was going to a wonderful new home. Her new owner bought her some new things to help make her feel comfortable – bed and toys and thing.

I messaged every rescue in Missouri and had some help through social media from a friend in Minnesota and someone heard about her and contacted me.  Actually, it was someone who helped run a rescue at one point who told a friend who told a friend. I was so happy when I knew she was going to be somewhere that she could live out her years with love!“

Thank you Heather for all of your effort and time and care in helping this senior cat find a loving home!  We all know that re-homing a senior pet can be extremely challenging.  Heather was determined to help this kitty and her hard work paid off!  Kudos to Heather!  You are a ROCK STAR in our eyes – and a ROCK STAR to the kitty and her new family!  Let us not forget that we are not only saving a pet’s life and enriching the quality of life for that pet, but our rescue work also impacts the lives of their humans in a positive way!

A very, very happy ending and we could all use a warm smile and that soft, warm, fuzzy feeling.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats Scheduled for late March!

Announcing our Spring Low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats!  Spare Cat Rescue is excited to work in conjunction with the fine doctors and staff at Central Pet Care Clinic in Carthage to bring you our Spring clinics!  These clinics will be held on March 19th & March 26th.  Appointments fill up fast so call ASAP to make your appointment.  Call 417-358-6808 and leave a message stating that you need to make an appointment for the clinic.  Your call we be returned within 48 hours.

Cost is $20 for male cats & $22 for female cats.  This cost includes a rabies vaccinations.  Other vaccinations will be offered the day of the appointment for an additional fee.

Tell all of your friends and coworkers!  Love is in the air and we are doing our part to try to reduce the number of homeless kittens and cats!

A Kitten(s) Recue Story

 

Last month, we received a message via facebook from one of our fans.  The message went something like this:

“I have a kitty that is around 7-8 weeks old that was living under my house and I finally captured the cutie using a chipmunk catcher, as funny as it is and I was curious if you guys would be willing to take him/her in. I don’t want this little one trying to grow up on the street and maybe get ran over or live a horrible life so I’m trying to find a place that can take him/her in and work with the kitty and get it a forever home. If you could just let me know or call me that would be great.”

We responded to the message with the usual information and suggestions – that we don’t have a shelter to house strays at and suggested making flyers and other various methods to try to find a home for the kitty.

Her next response was a pleasant surprise!!!

“Hello.  Thank you for the effort to try to help me. The reason why I wrote to you to get help is that I have never been put in this situation. I have had cats get dropped off back when I lived in the country and had some pretty amazing little babies that way but I’ve never experienced a little baby girl (yep little kitty is a girl) that just hates everything…or so it seems . I thought that it would take a while to get it accustomed to people and that I just wasn’t going to be up to the task or be able to help the little one out but it turns out I was just fine. It took me two days and she stopped hating humanity, learned to use the kitty litter box, learned to eat out of a bowl and better yet hard food and learned that water is actually something she likes so we have decided to just add a baby girl to our family…although we have to pick a different name because I thought it was a boy and named it Scruffy (LOL!).”

When I asked her if we could share her story with the others and asked what they decided to name the new kitten, we were even MORE surprised by the response:

“The new little kitty’s name is Ellanora. Turns out she also had two sisters and a brother. One of the little girls (Beowulf…she was grey and fought so hard to live so it seemed like a fitting name) didn’t make it but the other one did. Aesher and Kaine are now gladly being spoiled as well and having the time of there lives playing with Ellanora again.“

Just a cute story to share with you fellow cat lovers!  Thanks to Ellanora’s new human momma for taking her in and teaching her proper kitten manners and to love humans again.  And thanks for taking in Aesher & Kaine, too!  And thanks for your efforts to save little Beowulf.  Having your love and the comfort of being in your home made her last moments much better.

We are happy that it all worked out in the end!

Several Foster Kittens Soon Available For Adoption!! Raised in a Loving Home Environment and TRAINED in Life Skills!

Many of you fellow cat lovers know that Spare Cat Rescue doesn’t have a shelter facility to house cats and kittens and some of you have contacted us to ask us about taking in cats and kittens that have found their way to your home.  We would love to take them all in and help, but that’s not possible.  However, under very special circumstances, there is a spot available in our homes for a couple of foster cats or kittens from the shelter.  All of our volunteers are cat lovers, too, of course, and our homes are full to maximum capacity with our own pets so having a foster puts us over the top – especially having a whole litter of fosters or a special needs momma cat with a litter or a litter of bottle babies!

Along with a couple of other Spare Cat Rescue volunteers, Spare Cat Rescue volunteer, Kaylene is fostering kittens again. Eight shelter kittens from 5 different litters – some of them bottle babies. Everyone knows the kittens raised at Kaylene’s house make the world’s best pets.

If you want a chance at one of these extra special kittens for your new family member, be on the look out for them at PetSmart.

So what makes these kittens the best option when picking a loving pet? Kaylene says, “I have no expectations of how any cat or kitten should act. Everyone gets the chance to grow, play and learn in the manner in which they are comfortable. If a kitten doesn’t want to be held, that’s OK. If it prefers to sleep on a lap or play alone in a corner, that’s OK too. We don’t force interaction but accept it lovingly on the cat’s terms.”

Another good thing about Kaylene’s fosters is that they have been raised around dogs and what Kaylene calls her “pack”.  “I’ve been dragging fosters home for years, my own cats are used to it. You know that saying “it takes a village to raise a child”, well my pack can raise a kitten. They teach newcomers proper social interactions with other cats. We have babysitter cats who love to play with the kittens and doting grandmother cats to bathe and nurture them. My fosters even learn how to identify and deal with bullies – we have a few of those too!”

As for the dogs – they are stair steps – from an 8 pound pom to an 85 pound lab. They each interact differently with the kittens so the fosters get a lot of dog experience.

And of course, every cat has mastered the art of finding the litter box in a large house and has started on basic scratching post training. Staying off the table and counter tops – not so much.

All of Spare Cat Rescue’s fosters are raised in loving, doting homes and they are taught proper manners and trained to use clawing posts.

Watch here of pictures when they are ready for adoption and come and visit us at the Joplin PetSmart on Saturdays to keep up on who is ready for adoption!  We will be there today from 11 to 4 or so with nice dogs and cats and lots of kittens!!!  Come find your new best friend and family member!

Spare Cat Rescue Upcoming Fundraisers!

We have several exciting opportunities for you guys to help us raise money!  That’s right!  You can help!  Let’s break it down:

1.  We will be having a benefit rummage sale on Friday, November 7th and Saturday, November 8th on Liberty Street in Carthage (same place where we had the auction – a couple of blocks south of Fairview & HE Williams).  We are accepting donations of your items to sell at our rummage sale – and you can come and shop, too!!!  Please contact Darrell at 417-793-0564 to arrange to drop off your items for our sale!  Be looking for more information about the times of the sale…..

2.  We still have a ton of raffle tickets available for our kitty quilt – tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 – I have never seen such a gorgeous quilt!  The drawing will be held December 13th – ONE DOLLAR!!!!  ONE DOLLAR!!!  EVERYONE has one dollar in change somewhere – in the couch, in that black hole between the console and the seat in your car, in the bottom of your purse, in the washing machine….. 3.  And as you saw in the last post, we are selling beautiful, high-quality calendars with pictures of our former foster kitties and former residents of Carthage Humane Society that have found their forever homes.  They only cost $18!  That’s $1.50/month!

All of these fundraisers help us fund our programs for the cats and dogs and cat/dog owners in our area.  Low-cost spay/neuter clinics for cats are just one example of how we help out.  Our first fall clinic will be this Thursday and is totally booked, but we do still have space for kitties in our October 30th clinic!  Call 417-358-6808 and leave a message for an appointment.  We are able to sponsor part of the operation costs due to your generosity!  YOU make it possible!!!!  We have 4 of these clinics a year and usually alter about 120 cats during the clinics.  Think about all the homeless kittens that would be born if we didn’t have these clinics….

Last weekend, there was much Homecoming hoopla at the Joplin PetSmart.  With some great brainstorming, we all came up with some ideas and had a big Homecoming celebration last weekend!  SCR adopted 3 cats and 3 dogs and there were other groups there as well!  Great Homecomings for those pets that found forever homes last weekend! Due to limited space available on our blog for posting pictures, I have uploaded the entire album to our facebook page.

Don’t forget that we are selling quilt raffle tickets – also a cool hand-made scrapbook and lap quilt!! – call now to get yours!   417-358-6808 or 417-388-3340.  Tickets are $1 or 6 tickets for $5 and all proceeds will help pay for low-cost spay/neuter clinics in October.

Also, we have another fund raiser – I just received our 2015 12 month flip calendar (8.5×11) featuring cats and dogs from Spare Cat Rescue and the Carthage Humane Society!!!  We will be taking orders for these calendars very soon.  The rest of the board still has to approve the calendar as a fundraiser and we will have to set a price, but it is SUPER CUTE!!!!  Be looking for more details in a later post.  This will make a WONDERFUL Christmas or Birthday gift – especially for that person on your list who has everything and you will be supporting our low-cost spay/neuter clinics!!!

Fall is here – my favorite time of the year!  Last year, my heated water bowl finalyl pooped out on me and left me stranded – NO ONE had any left!  I think I will buy new ones early this year!  Don’t forget to put straw in your dog houses and cat houses to help keep your outside furry friends warm this winter!

Homecoming Queen!!!

Announcing Our Next Big Fundraiser – Don’t Miss Out!!!

A lot of fun stuff going on here in the next few months.  We have our low-cost spay/neuter clinics in October.  This Saturday, PetSmart if doing a special adoption event themed “Homecoming” – there will be lots of fun stuff!  Check out our facebook page for more info and come and see us!

Saturday (which you won’t be able to attend because you will be visiting us at PetSmart, right?) and Sunday the Joplin area welcomes back the American Cat Fanciers Association Cat Show after an absence for many years.  I believe the hours are 9 to 4 each day and admission is $5.  BUT if you take some canned dog and cat food, they will give you a discount.  I believe SEK Humane Society will be there doing cat adoptions and this food will probably help them stock their shelves.  They will have all kinds of pure bred cats and even some alley cats will be competing!  They have booths set up with cat themed merchandise as well as a booth with a veterinarian in it who will be answering all of your cat questions.  I am hoping to feel good enough to attend!

Saturday at PetSmart, we will be unveiling our NEWEST fundraiser – we will be selling raffle tickets for a Queen Size quilt full of kitties!  This quilt is outstanding.  The pictures may look familiar to you and that’s because they are.  The winner of our quilt in 2009 travels a lot and has had the quilt in a plastic blanket bag for the past few years and decided that she would donate it back to us, as much as she loves it, so that we could have a fundraiser and so someone else might get to enjoy the quilt.  So once again, we will be raffling off the cat quilt.  We will have tickets available at PetSmart on Saturday or you can call me at 417-388-3340 to get some tickets.  They are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.  Not only do we have the cat quilt to raffle, but one of our talented board members has also worked very hard to make us an adorable scrapbook that will be raffled along with the quilt.  We also have a quilted lap robe included in the package!  If you are not interested in any of these prizes, consider buying some tickets for a chance to win them to give away for Christmas or birthday gifts (my birthday is in April – hint hint…).  100% of ticket sales will go to fund low-cost spay/neuter clinics, tnr of feral cats as well as other special projects that benefit our local pets.

In October, we would like to share with you a fund raiser by Joplin Trails Committee – a bike ride – see our facebook page for more info… it may be a couple of days before I can get it loaded up…

On Sunday October 12th, Spare Cat Rescue will be joining the Carthage Humane Society in Central Park to kick off Maple Leaf festivities.  Come out and see us!  We will have several dog and cat beds for sale as well as other pet items – all brand new.  We also will be giving out free items for cat and dog owners just for stopping by to chit chat with us!  We will have new newsletters available as well as other material that pet owners might find of interest.  There has been talk of a kitten kissing booth too…!!! I believe the fun starts at 1:00 – more details to come soon…

If I can get motivated, we may be selling a calendar this year, too for 2015.  Pre-order only and I will have a sample available for you at the October 12th event as well as at PetSmart and we will announce it on Facebook, too.
